What is speech-to-text (STT)?

Speech-to-text, or STT, converts spoken audio into written text. It can run on recorded files, live streams, or short clips, and may add punctuation, speaker labels, timestamps, and confidence estimates.

For creators, support teams, researchers, and operators turning audio into searchable work. · Reviewed 2026-09-29

A normal STT workflow

A recorded customer call is uploaded, the service detects speech, maps sounds to words, and returns a transcript. An LLM can then summarize that transcript, extract objections, or turn it into content. STT does the listening; the LLM does the language work that follows.

What changes transcription quality

  • Microphone quality and background noise.
  • Accents, dialects, and speaking speed.
  • Overlapping speakers.
  • Language and vocabulary configuration.
  • Names, technical terms, and rare words.
  • Whether audio is live, short, or a long recording.

A confidence score is not a guarantee

Speech services may return confidence estimates, but a high score does not mean every proper name, number, or technical term is correct. Review the parts that drive a decision, payment, medical record, legal record, or published claim.
