What is Hugging Face?

Hugging Face is the main online hub where the AI community shares open-source models, datasets, and demo apps — think GitHub, but for machine learning. When a company or research lab releases an open-source LLM, chances are it lands on Hugging Face first.

The site hosts over a million models, and they are not just chatbots. You will find models for translation, image generation, speech recognition, and nearly every other AI task, most of them free to download and use.

Beyond hosting, Hugging Face builds the software glue that makes those models usable. Its Transformers library is the standard way developers load and run models in Python, and its other tools cover everything from fine-tuning to deployment. There is also Spaces, where anyone can publish a working demo you can try in your browser.

Who actually uses it? Researchers publish their work there, companies pull models to build products, and hobbyists browse it like an app store. It has become neutral ground for open AI — Meta, Google, Alibaba, and thousands of smaller labs all publish there.

The honest caveat: quality varies wildly. Anyone can upload a model, so download counts and community likes do a lot of the filtering for you. Start with models from well-known organizations and read the model card — the README that explains what a model does and what it was trained on.
