What is agentic AI?

Agentic AI describes systems that can plan or choose intermediate actions, use tools, inspect results, and continue toward a goal instead of producing one response and stopping.

For teams deciding whether a task needs an agent or a simpler, more predictable workflow. · Reviewed 2026-09-29

The difference from a normal AI call

A normal call might classify an email or draft a reply. An agentic system could classify the email, search a policy, check an account, prepare a response, and ask for approval. The extra capability is also the extra risk: every tool call can create a wrong or irreversible action.

Agentic does not mean independent

A well-designed agent has boundaries. It may be allowed to read a database but not write to it, draft a customer message but not send it, or spend up to a fixed budget before asking a human. “Autonomous” is a product choice, not a quality score.

Good first use cases

  • Multi-step research with a clear deliverable.
  • Triage that routes work to the right queue.
  • Repetitive operations with reversible actions.
  • Drafting that requires several approved tools and a human handoff.

Poor first use cases

Do not start with an agent when the task is a one-step generation problem, the rules are unclear, or a wrong action could create a legal, financial, or customer-support incident. A checklist may be cheaper, safer, and easier to improve.
