What is a vision-language model (VLM)?

A vision-language model can process visual inputs such as images or documents together with language. It can describe, answer questions about, compare, or extract information from visual material.

For teams deciding whether an AI task depends on visual information, not only text. · Reviewed 2026-09-29

A practical example

A warehouse team could give a VLM a photo of a damaged package and ask it to describe visible damage for a review queue. The result can help triage cases, but it should not automatically decide a warranty claim when the photo is blurry or the policy requires evidence the image cannot show.

What VLMs can handle

  • Images with written questions.
  • Screenshots, charts, and diagrams.
  • Scanned documents and forms.
  • Visual comparisons.
  • Image-grounded explanations or extraction.

Where visual models fail

Small text, unusual angles, dense diagrams, occlusion, counting, and ambiguous images can produce confident mistakes. Test the actual image quality and task rather than assuming that a model that describes a photograph can reliably read every business document.
