How to create a prompt template people can actually reuse

Create a reusable prompt by separating the task, variables, rules, source material, output format, and evaluation criteria. A template should reduce repeated thinking, not hide the decisions a user still needs to make.

For marketers, operators, and teams turning a successful AI task into a repeatable process. · Reviewed 2026-09-29

The template anatomy

  • Goal: the job and intended audience.
  • Inputs: fields the user must provide.
  • Rules: facts, exclusions, tone, and safety boundaries.
  • Process: the steps the model should follow.
  • Output contract: exact sections, fields, or format.
  • Review: what a person must check before using the result.

Example variable design

Instead of saving “Write a social post,” use fields such as `{offer}`, `{audience}`, `{approved_claims}`, `{proof}`, and `{call_to_action}`. If a field is missing, the template should ask for it or mark the gap instead of inventing an answer.

How to know it is reusable

Run the template on an ordinary task and an awkward one. If you need to rewrite the instructions every time, the process is not stable yet. Save the failed examples with the template so the next user understands the boundaries.
